Strawberry picking

It’s been a slow start to the strawberry season, but more and more farms are opening up with berries that are picked - and available for you to pick. Our strawberry farm database has the details.

Statewide Star Parties

Part of the N.C. Science Festival, free Statewide Star Parties are scheduled across the state this Friday and Saturday - including seven in the Triangle.

Raleigh

Theatre Raleigh continues its run of “Adventure Road: A Story of Tom and Huck.” Expect a creative twist on the classic Mark Twain stories. The 50-minute show runs through April 29 on select days at the Duke Energy Center for Performing Arts in Raleigh.

And Raleigh Little Theatre presents Alice@Wonderland, a modern-day spin on the classic. This time, Alice is texting, tweeting and Googling as she encounters Wonderland. Best for eight-year-olds and up. The show runs through April 22 and also includes a special sensory-friendly performance on April 28. Milk and cookies will be served up after the Thursday evening show.
Quail Ridge Books has a couple of kid-friendly events. Prolific North Carolina author Stacy McAnulty will share her fantastic picture book “Earth! My First 4.54 Billion Years” at 10:30 a.m., Saturday. And Johnny Ray Moore, author and poet, will read from his latest book, “Silence, Please.” There also will be a poetry-themed craft and refreshments. He’ll be there at 2 p.m., Saturday.
Raleigh City Farm will host a Bearthday celebration from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday. The free event includes a tour of the one-acre site in downtown Raleigh, vendors and nature-inspired crafts and games for kids.

Durham

The Sound of Music is on stage at the Durham Performing Arts Center Friday through Sunday. Kids under the age of 6 are not allowed at the performance. Tickets start at $30.
Durham’s Earth Day Festival is noon to 5 p.m., Sunday, at Durham Central Park, 501 Foster St. It’s free. Find food, music and hands-on environmental education activities.

Kidcycle children’s consignment sale will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday; and noon to 6 p.m., Sunday. Some items will be half off on Sunday, at Northgate Mall.
And The Scrap Exchange will have a weekend full of Earth Day-related activities. From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, there’s a Sale-a-bration to mark the opening of The Scrap Exchange’s new thrift store. The evening includes free make-and-take activities for kids (who are with a parent). And from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, there’s a free festival with kids’ activities, live demonstrations, music, environmental presentations and more.

Chapel Hill

A Rodeo on Rosemary with food trucks, mini golf and family-friendly entertainment, is noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, on Rosemary Street in front of the Wallace Parking Deck.
And Sunday is Family and Friends Sunday at Ackland Art Museum from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The free event offers activities designed for all ages.

Cary

The Girls World Expo, designed for teen girls, is noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, at the Embassy Suites Raleigh-Durham/Research Triangle in Cary. The event offers seminars, performances, vendors, demonstrations and more for teen girls.
Cary’s family performance series will bring in Atlantic Coast Theatre, who will present “Rockin’ Red Riding Hood,” a twist on the Little Red Riding Hood story. It’s at 10 a.m., Saturday. Tickets are $8.
Children’s Day Festival is 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, at Bond Metro Park. The free event features performances by more than 200 children representing different cultures, face painting, a community corner, an international tasting zone, balloon animals, food trucks and crafts.
NC Courage, the professional women’s soccer team, plays the Utah Royals at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, at WakeMed Soccer Park.
And Cary will host the first Downtown Chowdown of 2018 from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, along Academy Street in downtown Cary. A kid’s area will be set up on Park Street next to the Mayton Inn.

Wake Forest

The town will host an Arbor Day Expo and Tree Seedling Giveaway starting at 11 a.m., Saturday, at Joyner Park.

Goldston

In Chatham County, a world qualifying DockDogs competition will feature canine athletes jumping and launching themselves into pools of water. It takes place Friday through Sunday and is free to watch. It's about an hour from Raleigh.
