WELDON, N.C. — A 1-year-old boy died after being shot in the head in Halifax County Thursday night, authorities confirmed Friday.

The shooting happened at a home at 711 Elm St. in Weldon at about 8:15 p.m. Police said Jaxson Clay would have turned 2 on Dec. 23.

"Parents shouldn't have to bury their kids," Weldon Police Chief James Avens Jr. said. "Close to the holidays, everyone's in a loving spirit. To see someone lose their life so young, that kid will not get a chance to see Christmas."

Clifford Clay, Jaxson's great-grandfather, said he was in the house when he heard noises outside.

"All the sudden, I heard something I thought might have been an electrical short in the house – bam, bam, bam, bam – really not thinking anybody would be shooting," Clay said.

Police said there were no suspects in the shooting as of Thursday night, and the motive of the shooting is unclear.

Clay called his great-grandson a "lively little boy" and said he was "real sweet."

"I don't know why anybody would want to do something like this," he said.

The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting Weldon police with the investigation.
