ARCADIA, LA. — A man and boy from Lillington died early Monday when an 18-wheeler hit them along the right shoulder of Interstate 20 in Louisiana.

Louisiana State Police said Miguel Salas had pulled over and outside his Dodge Caravan assisting his 10-year-old son, Miguel Moreno, who was sick.

The truck plowed into them, hit the minivan and crashed into a tree off the side the road. The truck driver died on the scene.

Police did not release the truck driver's name. His family had yet to learn of the crash. Authorities said alcohol was not a factor, but in announcing the deaths, troopers made note of the hour – almost 1 a.m. – and said, "Sleepiness slows reaction time, decreases awareness and impairs judgment. Pull over and stop driving if you are having trouble keeping your eyes open, yawning, tailgating or drifting from your lane."

Three other passengers in Salas' minivan were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
