19-year-old dies after dirt bike accident in Raleigh

Posted December 22, 2013

— Raleigh police say a teenager died early Sunday afternoon after his scooter hit a curb.

Elijah Ijah McLendon, 19, was traveling on a 2012 Apollo ADR70 CC dirt bike then the wreck happened in the 5400 block of Dana Drive around 1:30 p.m.

"McLendon separated from the scooter and died as a result of his injuries," a police spokeswoman said.

Witnesses who rushed to help McLendon said he had been riding back and forth at what appeared to a high rate of speed when it appeared he hit something and lost control of the vehicle.

It's unclear whether McLendon was wearing a helmet. Witnesses said they found one not far from where the accident happened.

Police said the crash remains under investigation.

This is a very sad accident. My heart goes out to his family. Hopefully it was an isolated case. Were there any other bikes around? There is a situation in Baltimore that has become an issue with safety. Google "bike gangs of Baltimore". Hopefully that will not happen here.
