WILMINGTON, N.C. — A Carolina Beach police officer in a patrol vehicle hit and killed a child who ran out in front of the car Tuesday night.
Officer Colby Edens was leaving a residence on Kiwi Lane in Wilmington when 19-month-old Lucas Marcinko darted out in front of Eden's car, according to NBC affiliate WECT. Authorities said Marcinko was taking Edens' hat to him.

Edens was on his way to work after having dinner with Marcinko's mother. Edens and Marcinko's mother were dating, according to WECT.

Authorities said a full investigation would be conducted but did not anticipate any charges would be filed.
