— A Carolina Beach police officer in a patrol vehicle hit and killed a child who ran out in front of the car Tuesday night.

Officer Colby Edens was leaving a residence on Kiwi Lane in Wilmington when 19-month-old Lucas Marcinko darted out in front of Eden's car, according to NBC affiliate WECT. Authorities said Marcinko was taking Edens' hat to him.

Edens was on his way to work after having dinner with Marcinko's mother. Edens and Marcinko's mother were dating, according to WECT.

Authorities said a full investigation would be conducted but did not anticipate any charges would be filed.

Yes, not the best timing for such a question, sorry to sound uncaring and brash.

Gee Josha....not everyone is perfect like you apparently are. I can bet safely that there times when you didn't know where your son was when he was little and now that he's old enough to drive you still don't. Get off your holier than thou attitude.

This is really sad. I always tell my son to drive slow in residential neighborhoods because kids might dart into the street. I hate to say it, but where was his mother when the innocent child was dashing off to take him his hat? Why didn't she stop him?

Sad. Three lives destroyed or forever scared in a split second. Prayers for all involved.
