Community mourns Wake Forest teen killed in weekend crash

Friends of the Hannah Viall, who died Saturday night in a car crash, stood around a memorial built for her at the scene of the wreck on Sunday.

According to the Wake Forest Police Department, the single-car crash occurred around 9 p.m. at Heritage Hills Way and Vodin Street. Three teenagers were in the car, and Viall died at the scene. Another 15-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy were transported to the hospital with injuries.

Officials have not announced who was driving the car.

School officials sent a letter to parents Sunday confirming Viall was a 10th grade student at Heritage High School, where grief counselors will be on hand Monday.

"I don't know how I'm feeling. I don't know what I should feel. I just don't understand and I just wish it never happened," said Madysen Shelly, who was on Viall's cheerleading team.

A vigil was held Sunday evening at Wake Forest Presbyterian Church as the memorial continued to grow at the scene of the crash. "It just seems to unreal and so not possible that this happened to such a good person," Shelley said.

The letter sent to parents Sunday also said Wake County district officials believe there were many other students who may have seen the fatal crash unfold.

Heritage High School student Sean Stoyko said he drove up to the scene just minutes after the crash happened. "It's still sticking in my head. There was a girl laying there on the pavement and they hadn't covered her up yet," he said.

As the flowers for Viall kept coming, so did the memories of a bubbly, well-liked cheerleader.

"She was the person that you go to if you want to be happy," student Gabby Watson said.

Police have not released identities or the conditions of the other two teens.
