SELMA, N.C. — According to the Johnston County Sheriff's Office, a 14-year-old boy drowned Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the sheriff's office identified the boy as Carlos Anthony Reyes.

Johnston County Schools spokesperson confirmed Reyes was an eighth-grade student at North Johnston Middle School. The school district said grief counselors will be on hand this week.

The sheriff's office said they received a call around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday about a teenager drowning in a pond near Davis Mill Road and U.S. Highway 70 near Selma.

The pond in question is surrounded by no trespassing signs and plenty of trees, sitting far back off the main road.

EMS, Water Rescue and K9 crews responded to the scene.

It is unclear at this time the circumstances that led to the drowning.

The sheriff's office is continuing to investigate.

The drowning comes after the April 20 drowning of a 2-year-old in a pool in the McKinley Mill neighborhood. The family claims one of the slats in the pool fence was missing, which gave the boy the ability to slip past and enter the pool.
