About one in four children and one in five adults in our state do not have reliable access to affordable, healthy food.

RALEIGH, N.C. — About one in four children and one in five adults in our state do not have reliable access to affordable, healthy food.

It’s a condition known as food insecurity. North Carolina has the tenth highest rate of food insecurity in the nation. The rate of food insecurity is tied to poverty.

Many people on low incomes cannot afford to buy fresh fruits and vegetables and other healthy foods. They often buy the cheapest foods they can, which are usually dense in calories but low in nutritional value. That contributes to the high rate of obesity and associated health problems among the poor.

Access to healthy affordable food is also an issue. Many low-income areas are food deserts, meaning there’s no grocery store nearby that carries fresh fruits and vegetables.

“Hungry for Answers” is a half-hour documentary that looks at the issue of food insecurity and hunger in North Carolina. It profiles someone who has struggled with the issue, examines some of its causes and explores possible solutions.

"Hungry for Answers" is hosted and narrated by WRAL News anchor Debra Morgan.

HungerFreeNC is the week-long start of a community movement – Special programming all week and the first ever, day-long MEDIAthon on TV, radio and web to raise money for the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, our non-profit partner.

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is nurturing long-term solutions to hunger and providing access to fresh, healthy food.

For success, we need you to get involved in this powerful community partnership with WRAL-TV and Radio One Raleigh.
