12-year-old shot at Smithfield party

Posted June 7, 2010

— A 12-year-old was shot in the abdomen early Sunday at a party in Smithfield, police said Monday.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired at the Progressive Men's Club, at 1208 Old Goldsboro Road, at about 12:45 a.m. Sunday. Someone outside the building fired several shots while a party was going on inside, police said.

The gunman fled the area before officers arrived, police said.

The 12-year-old, whose name hasn't been released, was taken to WakeMed and was listed in stable condition, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Smithfield Police Department's tip line at 919-989-8835 or Detective D.R. Johnson at 919-989-1063.

The Progressive Men's Club is NOT a club like any of you are thinking. Its a building that is owned by a group of men who do work in the community, and its rented out for social events. It is not uncommon for people to have gatherings there, and Im sure that it was well under control before this happened. People need to find more facts before they jump off the deep end... Its terrible that the little boy was shot, but I am also fairly certain that it was an innocent party for preteens.

wtvd says the building was rented out for a pre-teen end of school year party. What kind of pre-teen party lasts until 12:45am? What parent would let their child attend something like that at age 12??

If WRAL would do their homework, they would have discovered the fact that this pt. went to the appropriate medical facility, WakeMed. And Johnston County wants to keep their ambulances in Johnston County and not go to Raleigh, good luck with that when you need actual care for a stroke, heart attack or trauma.

OK, 12:45am, "Men's Club", 12 year old outside. I hope the best for the kid but what in the world was a 12 year old doing outside an adult business at 12:45 in the morning? Hello...child protective services anyone?

"ince when is JMH a trauma center?" Heck, I am still trying to figure what they think makes them a medical center?

  • cwood3 Jun 7, 2010

AMEN-pattip,I would not take my dog to Johnston Memorial-especailly for something serious like a gunshot. Unless the kid was near critical-hince they would have moved him on anyway.

Strange occuarance-hope the PD stays on top of this situation.

since when is JMH a trauma center?

May the officers catch this person soon. I do hope the 12 year old will be alright. The person could have killed this child.

  • Desiderata Jun 7, 2010

OK, Party at home next time! Well wishes for the child..
