RALEIGH, N.C. — Twelve people were killed statewide in automobile crashes over the Memorial Day weekend, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Statistics on the total number of crashes over the holiday won't be compiled until late Wednesday, said Beth Horner, spokeswoman for the Governor's Highway Safety Program.

Last year, 19 people were killed and 767 were injured on state highways during the same period, authorities said.
