Eleven athletes from across North Carolina have qualified to compete at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China, officials said Wednesday.

<b>RALEIGH, N.C.</b> — Eleven athletes from across North Carolina have qualified to compete at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China, officials said Wednesday.

As part of  Special Olympics Team USA, the athletes will compete against athletes from more than 150 countries around the world. The Special Olympics World Summer Games, which are going to be held in Asia for the first time, are scheduled for Oct. 2-11.

The following North Carolina athletes have qualified for the Shanghai games:

Cortney Quinn of Onslow County and Jonathan Wright of Burke County in aquatics; Kenneth Blue of New Hanover County and Nancy Tester of Haywood County in bocce; Kerry Hagner of Orange County and Jason Philemon of Guilford/High Point in cycling; Delaney Hansen of Davie County in equestrian; Brian Carter of Durham County and Matthew Jaekel of  Catawba County in powerlifting; and Kathryn Frye of Pitt County and Christopher Richards of Pitt County in roller-skating.

Special Olympics, the University of North Carolina and Fudan University in China also announced the launch of <a href="http://www.specialolympicslive.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: bold;">specialolympicslive.org</span></a>, a student-led project that will make it possible for Internet users around the world to watch their favorite athletes compete at the games.
