102 sent home for violating Wilson Schools dress code

Posted October 7, 2009

More than 100 students were suspended from Wilson County high schools Wednesday for violations of the dress code, spokesman Bob Kendell said. The total attendance of the three schools is about 3,500 students.

Wednesday was the first day that new penalties applied to dress code offenders. In the past, a first offense earned lunch detention, a second, after-school detention and a third, a three-day suspension. Beginning Wednesday, every dress code violator will be suspended for three days, Kendell said.

The dress code specifically forbids low-riding pants and un-tucked shirts.

There was a wonderful judge in Orange County who just retired this past summer. In his court, the clerk and/or bailiff would issue a warning prior to court coming in session. If anyone appeared before the judge with either the but t showing, or the untucked shirt, they would be found in contempt and sent to jail. (There weren't many untucked shirts in that courtroom)

So what happened to my comment? All it said was GOOD! and give them a belt to go with it so they have no excuse for showing their behinds and underwear. Can't get much tackier than that.

Exactly due - that video is the main point. And if students ARE sagging, then the awkward duck walk and pulling, tugging motions around the pants and strange placements of the hands is just an "assumption" it is to keep the pants from falling all the way off.

For those who don't get the untucked shirt, please check this out. Note, the student is not even wearing saggy jeans.

SemperFi- true; but for many parents, it means 6 more meals that those jokers are going to have to eat at home and not at school; it may mean that Johnny has to find a place to go for the next 3 days b/c he is not staying home alone; it means that some kids have chores for 3 days. They also have to make work up that they have missed and 3 absences in less than 30 days. For those students who care, this will send a strong message. To those who planned to sag but didn't do it on this day, it makes them more aware of their appearance as well as the policy. For those who don't give a darn, this will be the first of many more to come.

Dshell, with your plan, who will teach? There are 3-4 administrators, maybe 60 staff and over 1500 students. Who has time to track this when we have a judge this trying to close schools because students are not doing well on end of course tests and not meeting the NCLB standards? Are you serious. And for the records, detention means absolutely nothing. Kids are detained in a room, with only so many seats, for a period of time and then released. You cannot do it everyday b/c they are missing instructions so you will have to send them back to class.
Rheanna - you are missing the point. In the real world, there is a dress code. Have you gone into McD's and seen employees with their bottoms showing? No. If the manager tells them to pull them up and they don't, do you know what will happen? Unemployed. It is about safety, following rules, and presentation. Schools are supposed to prepare kids for the real world, not trailer parks and street corners. Fashion has its place.

The way a 16-17 year old dresses and goes to school will tell you what kind of parent he/she has.

I, like others, don't get the untucked shirt thing... There are so many styles these days in which a shirt should not be tucked in... Baggy pants - sure... Shirts - a bit much... Although perhaps there's more detail to this dress code than what is written in the article... If they want tucked in shirts, then require a uniform in which the type of shirt worn is the type made to be tucked in...

I can see a 3 day suspension in school but a 3 day suspension out of school is considered a vacation for some... Parents leave & go to work & kids can sit & enjoy having 3 days away from the classroom. And the lesson they learn is.....? It certainly isn't schoolwork......
