SELMA, N.C. — A 1-year-old child was taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital on Thursday after a fire severely damaged his home, Fire Marshall Chris Perry said.

The fire started in the kitchen of the home on Hunting Drive in Selma, Perry said.

The 1-year-old and two other young children were in the care of a teen relative when the fire broke out.

The children’s father was at work and their mother was in the hospital for an unrelated illness.

The fire was accidental.

The teen and other children were not seriously hurt.
