DURHAM, N.C. — A 1-year-old child was critically injured in a hit and run while sitting inside a car that had run out of gas late Wednesday on Interstate 85 in Durham.

Police said Thursday that a Dodge pickup truck crashed into the back of the Honda Accord, which was parked on the Roxboro Street off-ramp from northbound I-85 around 11:50 p.m.

The child, who was in a car seat in the back of the Honda, was being treated at Duke University Hospital Thursday.

A woman and a 3-year-old child who were in the car were also treated for minor injuries.

Authorities did not release their names.

The pickup truck's driver, Oscar Jarmillo-Perez, 26, of Constance Avenue in Durham, was later arrested and charged with driving while impaired and felony hit-and-run.

Police said that, after the crash, the driver and another person in the truck jumped and ran. A third passenger was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The exit ramp from I-85 North to North Roxboro Street was closed for several hours overnight while investigators took measurements and tried to determine a cause of the wreck.
