Man hospitalized after attempted rescue off Kure Beach pier; 1 still missing

Posted March 7

With boats and helicopters, the Coast Guard searched for a man who jumped into the ocean from the Kure Beach pier.

— A man who jumped into the ocean Monday to save another was recovering at New Hanover Regional Medical Center while the Coast Guard continued the search for his friend.

Emergency crews were called to the Kure Beach Fishing Pier just before 2 p.m. Monday.

“We got two people in the water at Kure Beach," a man told a 911 operator. “One guy dove in to help the other one, and now he’s stuck out there. And the other boy’s down, I don’t know where he’s at. He just totally disappeared.”

It took rescuers less than 10 minutes to find one swimmer. He was about 90 yards from shore. A 911 caller relayed the rescue and his concern for the other swimmer.

"I think he’s got him. He’s got him, he’s got him," the caller said. "There’s one good, and the other one is still down. I don’t know where he’s at."

Maynor Francisco Cruz Bardalez, 25, of Wilmington, was still missing Tuesday at noon despite a concentrated overnight search by a helicopter and at least two Coast Guard boats.
