PEMBROKE, N.C. — A former North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper died early Tuesday morning in a fire at his Robeson County home.

Authorities said the home at 2651 Philadelphus Road near Pembroke was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived just before 1 a.m. Officials found Michael Wayne Chavis, 58, inside the residence.

Chavis was the only person inside the home at the time, according to officials. Stephanie Chavis, the Robeson County fire marshal, said Michale Chavis just celebrated his birthday in November.

Stephanie Chavis and Michael Chavis are not related.

The cause of Michael Chavis' death is pending an autopsy.
