FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Stedman woman died Tuesday in a four-car accident on U.S. Highway 401, officials said.

Janet Jackson, 37, was traveling north on U.S. 401 when she began to stop behind other traffic, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. As Jackson came to a stop, a 1999 Ford Mustang driven by an unidentified person crashed into the back of Jackson's vehicle, forcing it left of the center line.

Jackson's Toyota Camry was hit in the passenger side by a large truck driven by Charley Hall Jr., 48, of Fayetteville, which was traveling the opposite direction. The Camry flipped and came to rest in a yard.

Responders pulled Jackson from her car and transported her to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

A fourth car, a 1997 Corolla driven by Jamie Edwards, 20, of Fayetteville, swerved to avoid the earlier crash and drove into a fence. Edwards was injured, but authorities did not release the severity of the injuries.
