FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — A single-engine Thatcher CX4 registered to a pilot from Angier crash landed Tuesday afternoon near Fuquay/Angier air field off N.C. Highway 55.

State Highway Patrol troopers said Rodney Whipple, 78, of Angier, was piloting a small, single-seat fixed wing aircraft when it collided with several trees near the air field.

Whipple was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers said no one else or property was injured.

A single-engine Thatcher CX4 registered to a pilot from Angier crash landed Tuesday afternoon near Fuquay/Angier air field off N.C. Highway 55.

Although the words "U.S. Air Force" are visible on the side of the plane, a spokesman from Pope Army Airfield told WRAL News that doesn't necessarily mean the plane belongs to the Air Force.

Officials said the Air Force markings were just decoratively on Whipple's, and the plane was privately owned and not affiliated with the Armed Forces.

Another pilot told WRAL News that Whipple had built the plane from a kit, but they were unsure if he was a veteran.

The FAA will be investigating to determine the cause of the crash.
