ZEBULON, N.C. — The North Carolina Highway Patrol says one person was killed Thursday night in a fiery wreck on U.S. Highway 64 in Zebulon.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a 2006 Pontiac G6 drove off U.S. Highway 64 at Shepard School Road around 11 p.m., struck a tree and became engulfed in flames. A witness told state Highway Patrol officials the car was speeding and weaving in and out of traffic before the wreck.

The fire spread to the adjacent wood line near the wreck, but it was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

Authorities have not yet identified the person killed in the wreck.

One lane of U.S. 64 was closed for about two hours after the wreck.
