DURHAM, N.C. — One person died and another was taken to a hospital early Wednesday after a single-vehicle crash in Durham, police said.

The accident happened shortly before midnight when a northbound 2013 Hyundai driven by Melvin Jamal Brewington, 23, ran off the right side of U.S. Highway 15/501 at West Cornwallis Road and struck a concrete barrier, police said.

A passenger in the vehicle, Brittany Plummer, 27, a senior at North Carolina Central University, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brewington was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. His condition was unknown Wednesday morning.

No charges have been filed, but the crash remains under investigation, police said. Speed appears to have been a factor, they said.
