One dead after Amtrak train strikes man in Benson

A man died early Sunday morning after he was struck by an Amtrak passenger train near Benson.

BENSON, N.C. — A man died early Sunday morning after he was struck by an Amtrak passenger train in Benson.

According to Amtrak, Train 98, on route from Miami to New York, struck Arron Scott Gill, 44, of Newton Grove, around 1:40 a.m. The accident occurred near the 301 highway overpass.

There were no injuries to the 298 passengers or crew.

The victim appeared to have been lying on the tracks, said the Benson Police Department. Local authorities are still investigating the accident.

The train was delayed about three hours and 15 minutes.
