COLUMBIA, N.C. — Officials with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said one person died Saturday morning when an 18-wheeler Harris Teeter truck crashed and overturned on a bridge in Dare County.

Around 9:30 a.m., officials responded to an accident on the Alligator River Bridge, a segment of US-64 that crosses the Alligator River connecting Tyrrell County to Dare County.

The driver of the truck, Michael Wade York, 64, died in the crash. According to troopers, York was an employee of Harris Teeter's Greensboro distribution center.

The investigation is ongoing, but authorities are attributing the crash, and several others that occurred on and near the bridge earlier Saturday, to high winds and severe weather conditions.

A second Harris Teeter truck was involved in a separate crash on the Virginia Dare Bridge Saturday afternoon. The driver survived.

Authorities had to close another Dare County bridge, the Virginia Dare Bridge, at noon when a different tractor trailer overturned. The area is one of the most heavily impacted from Post-Tropical Storm Hermine, which caused flooding, heavy winds and severe weather conditions across the coast Saturday.

Officials said both bridges reopened at about 5 p.m.
