GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Two people died and another was injured early Saturday morning during a shooting in Goldsboro, police said.

Officers responded just before 3 a.m. after hearing gunfire in the 600 block of Second Street, according to the Goldsboro Police Department.

Shortly after the shooting, three people showed up to Wayne Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds.

Authorities identified the victims as Carlis Benton, 38, Carlos Darden, 42, and Joshua Davis, 30. Benton and Darden died at the hospital, and Davis sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Earl Nails said he heard gunshots during a birthday party at his home.

"I was inside, and I heard a lot of pop, pop, pop," Nails said. "So I told the people that were in there to stay down."

He said he doesn't know the victims and he's sad the shooting happened in his neighborhood.

"Very nice neighborhood," he said. "This doesn't happen. It's an unusual scene. That's why I say I'm very despondent."

Anyone with information about the shooting should call or text Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255.
