SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A 19-year-old Clayton woman died Monday afternoon in a one-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 70 Business near the Johnston County Airport, the Highway Patrol said.
Shanna Jones was driving westbound when her pickup truck ran off the right side of the road, came back onto the highway, then went off the right side again, hitting a ditch, rolling over and striking a tree, troopers said. They said she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The car was traveling at high speed, troopers said, but they did not have an estimate of the speed Monday night.
The accident happened about 4:45 p.m. Parts of 70 Business were closed for about two hours.
