'The Typewriter Project' opens at North Hills

A new public arts initiative titled "The Typewriter Project: The Subconscious of the City" will remain open throughout April at North Hills.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A new public arts initiative titled "The Typewriter Project: The Subconscious of the City" will remain open throughout April at North Hills.

The interactive exhibit opened to the community on April 1. The project is a joint effort between The Poetry Society of New York and several literary groups, Midtown Events at North Hills and a local bookstore, Quail Ridge Books.

Essentially, a "typewriter booth" rests in front of the Quail Ridge storefront at North Hills, containing a vintage typewriter, a 100-foot long paper scroll and a custom-built tool that allows every keystroke to be collected and posted online for users to read, share and comment upon.

"The idea is modeled after the writing game in which several authors contribute to one poem," organizers explained. "We hope that users will also be influenced by what was written before them on the scroll."

Visitors can stop by the booth to add their thoughts, ideas and stories daily between 9 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. The exhibit will close on April 30.

"The Typewriter Project’s mission is to investigate, document and preserve the poetic subconscious of the specific corners of Raleigh while providing a fun, interactive way for the public to engage with the written word," said representatives from Quail Ridge. "We can't wait for the looks on children's faces when many face a typewriter for the first time."
