CREEDMOOR, N.C. — A man died and a woman was injured in a series of crashes Friday afternoon in Creedmoor, officials said.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers said 20-year-old Thomas Winstead lost control of his vehicle and slid off Brogden Road into a ditch. He was able to get out of his car and make his way back to the road to flag down help.

Tammy Butler and Jessica Johnson stopped their vehicles along the narrow, two-lane road to help. Johnson called 911 for assistance when another car, driven by 17-year-old James Pettus, careened toward them. Pettus' car crashed into them, pinning Butler against a vehicle.

Family members said Winstead was hit by Pettus' vehicle and died on the way to the hospital.

"We had just saved him," Johnson said. "We just got him to safety, and all I could do was call 911 back. The second time I called them, all I could do was scream and cry."

Butler's daughter said her mother is still on oxygen in the hospital and has broken bones.

"She's sitting in the hospital in the ICU, and I'm at home with my husband because that one time I listened to someone telling me, 'Get out of the way, jump, get out of the way,' and I did," Johnson said.

Troopers are still investigating the crash.
