RALEIGH, N.C. — Afternoon temperatures in the 80s and low humidity were making the first day of summer feel more like spring Friday across central and eastern North Carolina.

Temperatures climbed slowly through the 60s and 70s Friday morning, and they should top out in the low 80s during the afternoon under partly cloudy skies.

"We're really seeing some rare air for the official start to summer," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said. "We'll have very low dew points and very comfortable temperatures all day. And since it is the longest day of the year, you'll have a little more than 14 hours to enjoy today's weather."

Areas along and east of Interstate 95 could see a stray shower Friday afternoon thanks to a stationary front off the North Carolina coast, but much of the state will stay dry to close the work week.

More moisture associated with the front will filter back into the central part of the state over the weekend, helping create the chance for afternoon showers and storms both Saturday and Sunday.

"Neither day is going to be a washout, but we could see those scattered afternoon storms pop up either day," Gardner said. "And we will start to see our humidity creep back up. It will feel more like summer as we go through the weekend and into next week."

High temperatures will climb steadily during the summer's first weekend, peaking at 85 degrees Saturday and 87 Sunday.

By early next week, daytime highs will be in the 90s and overnight lows will return to the upper 60s to near 70 degrees.
