I-40 W reopens in western NC after rock slide

North Carolina transportation crews reopened Sunday all westbound lanes of Interstate 40 in Haywood County, just days after a rock slide left 600 tons of rock on the highway.

Drivers are still urged to use caution and should expect delays in the area, the state Department of Transportation said. One of the roadway's two lanes remains closed in nearby Tennessee.

The mud slide in Tennessee happened Tuesday in Cocke County just over the state line, while the Friday rock slide in North Carolina happened around mile marker 7.

Crews have said they hope to have I-40 westbound reopened by Monday, but they warn this weekend's rain and storms could delay the schedule.

The eastbound lanes of the interstate have not been affected.

A massive rock slide on I-40 in North Carolina in October 2009 closed the interstate for six months.
