'Black Lives Matter' protest blocks traffic in Durham

The group said it is protesting recent police-involved shootings in the United States.

Protest organizers said in a press release that they are demanding “divestment from the police, and oppose the building of a new $71 million police headquarters in Durham.”

Chanelle Croxton was among a small group of people that chained themselves to a railing outside the police station in Durham.

"When we see police, we don't see safety, we don't see comfort," Croxton said. "We don't see security. We see a threat, and we see someone who will kill us.

"Without the police, we would be just fine."

Organizers told WRAL News that the group did not have a permit to be on the street. No arrests have been made.

"The Durham Police Department respects and supports the privileges of individuals to exercise their First Amendment rights through peaceful protests," said a Durham Police Department spokesman. "We will continue to monitor these gatherings to ensure the safety and welfare of the participants and others that may be impacted."
