‘American Idol’ Is Making A Comeback—This Time On ABC
Posted May 10
“This. Is. American Idol!”
After just one year off the air, the ABC network announced the return of the iconic TV show in the 2017-18 season. This means a network switch for the show, which ran 15 seasons on FOX starting in 2002.
ABC officials believe “Idol” is ready for a return and negotiated to bring it back.
"'American Idol' is a pop-culture staple that left the air too soon," said Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, in a statement. "ABC is the right home to reignite the fan base. We are thrilled viewers will once again share in these inspiring stories of people realizing their dreams."
‘American Idol’ Auditions Coming To Walt Disney World
The new “American Idol” will likely see a number of changes to its original format, including where people can audition. According to TMZ, ABC plans to hold auditions at the Walt Disney World resort in Florida. Previously, prospective performers attended auditions held around the country. However, in an effort to save on costs (and cross-promote since Disney owns ABC), it looks like the House of Mouse will host auditions.
Walt Disney World and “American Idol” do have a history. One of its theme parks, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, hosted “The American Idol Experience” attraction. Starting in 2009, park guests could perform in live singing competitions on a replica “Idol” stage. Singers would then take the stage in a finale show at the end of the day. The top singer won a “dream ticket” which allowed them to skip the line at a regional “American Idol” audition. The attraction closed in 2014 as the TV show’s ratings declined.
New “Idol” Judges, Host Still Uncertain
ABC did not announce who will judge or host the competition. The chances of bringing back the original team of judges, Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson, seem slim. Cowell already judges on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” so his return is unlikely.
TMZ reports Kelly Clarkson might be in line as a potential judge, but the first “Idol” champion has not confirmed this, yet.
As for Ryan Seacrest, he just got a new full-time gig as co-host of “Live with Kelly and Ryan” with Kelly Ripa on ABC. However, he didn’t exactly say no when his co-host asked him about the possibility.
So, what do you think about “Idol’s” return? Good idea? What about the judges and host?
