— A reward of up to $6,000 has been offered for tips that help solve the robbery and assault of a 51-year-old woman outside a Henderson store last week.

Police Lt. Christopher Ball said that Debra Smiley, of South Hill, Va., was attacked and robbed as she left the J.C. Penny's department store on North Cooper Drive around 8:25 p.m. on Sept. 22. Smiley suffered multiple injuries, including broken bones, but is recovering.

An anonymous donor on Tuesday offered to match a $3,000 Crime Stoppers rewards for tips, bringing the total reward to $6,000.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 252-492-1925 or Henderson police at 252-438-4141. All callers may remain anonymous.

I grew up there myself. Not so much violence there when I was a little girl. Either that or my folks did a good job of sheilding me from it. Who knows... I pray that lady recovers fine and the attackers are caught.

Phwner, I agree. I've started calling it "Sparta". You know how "In the Heat of the Night", that small town always had something major going on?

  • Buddy110 Sep 29, 2011

It wasn't reported because incidents like these don't fit the social engineering template.

I pray that they find the person or people who did this. People are so mean. North Carolina has a lot of small towns and those people have always been mean!!!! I know,I grew up there. My hearts goes out to this poor woman. I know that you will have and had a lot of sleepless nights, but GOD will make a way for you. GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!! You should not have had to go through this.I'm sorry that this happened to you.

@SouthernGirl; this was reported in the local paper, Henderson Daily Dispatch, but not on the larger news networks such as WRAL. Not sure why this did not make news on larger outlets.

Why in the world did the perp beat the lady like that? It's a shame the store had no video or none reported. A speedy recovery for the victim.
