$600K US energy grant awarded to Mohawk tribe in northern NY

Posted September 14

— The U.S. government has awarded $600,000 to the Mohawk Indian tribe to improve energy efficiency and indoor air quality for scores of homes of tribal members.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Tuesday that it has awarded the funds to the Saint Regis Mohawk tribe's Akwesasne (og-wuh-SAHZ'-nee) Housing Authority to make improvements in 96 homes. The tribe's reservation straddles the U.S.-Canada border in northern New York.

The grants come from HUD's Indian Community Development Block Grant program, which supports a range of community development and affordable housing efforts.

HUD officials say upgrading energy efficiency will result in big savings for reservation residents, especially during harsh North Country winters.
