— Durham police say that someone stole a bag containing $36,000 in cash left in a shopping cart outside a Walmart store Wednesday.

A man told police that he accidentally left the money bag in the cart after loading his purchases in his car and driving away from the store at 5450 New Hope Commons Drive. When the man returned 15 minutes later, his bag and cash were gone.

Police said a man was seen taking an item from a shopping cart, then driving away in a red vehicle, possibly a Dodge Caravan with a "taxi" sign on top.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for anonymous tips that lead to arrests in certain cases.

Only an fool would be packing around 36K in cash and go shopping at Walmart. Furthermore, how do you forget that you left 36k sitting in a shoping cart? This guy has got to be either a fool or a liar, and I would tend to beleive it is the latter.

Anyone ever hear of "cash cab"? People jump in a NY Taxi and answer a few questions to win as much as $1000. In NC, the TAXI drives up, answers NO question, and gets $36000. Nice

Stolen? Cash is a bearer instrument...you drop it, you lost it. There simply are no ownership rights to it other than holding it...if you are not holding it...you have no ownership rights, period.

This cash was effectively abandoned and recovered by somebody else...it is theirs now and no court would ever make the finder return it...just won't happen. Basic law...always been that way.

"I would imagine it was his employer's $"

IOW...I'll "accidentally" leave the cash somewhere. You pick it up and we'll call it stolen and split it.

Sounds like somebody decided to keep money from a business that should have been deposited at a bank....Or someone is foolish and thinks insurance would cover this...Or both
