The annual Race for the Cure is a tradition for many in the Triangle.

This 5K race, held Saturday at Boxyard at Research Triangle Park, is more than a fundraiser. It is a community celebration of how far the fight against breast cancer has come.

Hundreds showed up to walk or run, with a goal of raising $250,000 this year for the cause.

"It is such a wonderful time for the community to come together and lean on one another and support each other," says Jenn Briand, executive director of North and South Carolina, at Susan G. Komen. "As as we all know, many families have to deal with a cancer diagnosis. Everyone knows someone who is on that journey."

In North Carolina, 11,190 women are estimated to be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024 and 1,450 will die of the disease. The money raised for Susan G. Komen goes toward research and to provide assistance for people who could otherwise not afford cancer screenings.

Donations invest in our patient care center, which really takes care of people going through cancer from A to Z," Briand said. "The patient care center is a huge piece of where the funds about ... to provide really great resources online and accessible in the community."

Komen funds have also supported millions of dollars of cutting edge research, discoveries that have improved treatments and outcomes for those who hear those scary words: "You have cancer."

"This year’s race is not just an event; it’s a pivotal moment to secure vital funds, that will make better treatments and equitable care available for all."
