Man charged in car break-ins at Orange County parks

A Durham man faces charges after investigators say he broke into multiple cars on greenways in Orange County.

Arrest warrants say four people were impacted across three different popular parks.

There are signs at each spot warning of video surveillance – and that helped investigators catch a suspect.

Larry Earl Steward was arrested on Thursday after the Orange County Sheriff's Office put out a warning, a photo and a vehicle description this past Saturday.

Investigators believe Steward broke into cars on April 9 and April 23 at Hollow Rock Nature Park, Johnston Mill Nature Preserve and New Hope Creek Trail.

He faces a slew of charges, including:

  • felony breaking and entering
  • identity theft
  • injury to property.

Steward also has two pending charges for breaking and entering in Durham.

During his first appearance, an Orange County Judge issued a $10,000 bond.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office says if you do have your debit or credit cards stolen, you should cancel them immediately.
